Nepal is a small (147,480 km2) country in the central Himalayan Mountains between India and China. It consists of low tropical plains and central plateaus that rise up to the world’s highest peaks. Arable land covers 16.7% of its land area. The population in 2011 was 30.5 million. According to the Nepal Department of Agriculture, agriculture provides a livelihood for 66% of the economically active population and accounts for 39% of GDP.
