Write-up taken from the IRRI's Rice Almanac (2013):

Italy is the main rice-producing country in Europe. It forms a large peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea, with 301,340 km2 of surface area, supporting a population of 60.8 million (2011). Rice is grown mainly in the northern Po Valley. Arable land makes up 23.4% of the land area. Agriculture as a whole occupies less than 4% of the workforce and contributes only 1.9% to GDP.
