Write-up taken from the IRRI's Rice Almanac (2013):

Suriname is a small Latin American country bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between French Guiana and Guyana, with an area of 163,820 km2. It consists of swampy coastal plains where rice, sugarcane, and other crops are grown and tropical forest on inland hills. The population in 2011 was 0.53 million. There is little arable land; bauxite mining dominates the economy. However, agriculture accounted for 10.9% of GDP in 2010 and occupied 17% of the workforce.
