Nicaragua, a small country of 130,370 km2 in Central America, faces the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Much of the interior is mountainous and volcanic. The bulk of the population of 5.87 million (2011) lives on the western side of the country. Arable land is 15.8% of the land area. Agriculture is undertaken by 15% of the workforce and makes up 20% of GDP (2011).
